Manchester United supporter groups are objecting to the club’s handling of season-ticket suspensions linked to a review of possible illegal resale. The dispute centres on fans whose accounts showed access from six or more devices or ticket-forwarding activity that United viewed as potentially suspicious.
The groups involved include the official Fans’ Forum, Manchester United Supporters Trust and The 1958, along with other supporter organisations. Their concern is not the fight against touting itself, but whether loyal fans are being restricted before they have had a fair chance to explain their account activity.
According to the source report, fans contacted by United were asked to explain multiple-account access, identify devices and provide photo ID. Some supporters have said multiple devices may reflect ordinary circumstances, such as helping older relatives with technology or managing tickets for friends.
United’s reported position is that no formal bans or sanctions have been applied, and that any revoked season tickets are expected to be reissued before the club’s first home match of the season against Ipswich Town on 30 August. The club has also used a shortened three-day appeal window in these cases, rather than the usual 14 days, because of concerns that tickets could otherwise be resold during the process.
The case raises a broader governance question for football clubs: how can they act firmly against illegal resale while avoiding a process that ordinary supporters experience as opaque or punitive?
