Chelsea’s growing Manchester City academy connection explained

Chelsea have added another former Manchester City academy graduate in Morgan Rogers, joining a group at Stamford Bridge that already includes Cole Palmer, Liam Delap, Romeo Lavia, Jamie Gittens and Tosin Adarabioyo. The trend reflects both recruitment strategy and the growing influence of City-trained players and staff inside Chelsea’s football operation.

The link has a striking origin point: City’s 2020 FA Youth Cup final win over Chelsea, when Rogers and Palmer scored and Delap led the attack. Several years later, those players are now part of Chelsea’s senior rebuild, with their combined fees reported at close to £300m since 2023.

Palmer’s success after his 2023 move appears to have strengthened Chelsea’s confidence in City-developed talent. The club also has former City figures in recruitment, coaching and academy roles, including Joe Shields, Calum McFarlane and Glenn van der Kraan, adding another layer to the shift.

The pattern also raises questions about Chelsea’s own Cobham pathway. While Reece James, Levi Colwill and Josh Acheampong remain key homegrown names, the club has also sold academy players and faces ongoing scrutiny over how it balances spending, development and first-team opportunity.
